What is car rental reimbursement and travel expenses coverage?

If your car is in the repair shop because of damage that’s covered by your comprehensive or collision insurance, rental reimbursement coverage will help pay the cost to rent a car — or commercial transportation expenses — that you use to get to work, to school, or for other day-to-day activities.

What car rental reimbursement covers

If you rent from a company in our network, State Farm® will pay them directly. If not, you'll need to pay the rental fees, but we'll reimburse you up to your policy limit. How so? If your car is stolen or damaged in a covered loss, coverage may pay all or part of your expenses to rent a vehicle.

Car rental expense

Pays up to the limits you chose in your policy, when you or a relative who primarily lives with you rents a car while your car isn't drivable because of damage that would be payable under your comprehensive or collision coverage. There’s a daily and per claim limit to the coverage.

Travel expenses

Pays for meals, lodging, and transportation home or to your destination — up to $500 per loss — if your car isn't drivable because of damage done more than 50 miles from home that's covered by your comprehensive or collision insurance. A return trip to pick up your car is also covered.

Commercial transportation
expenses

Helps pay for such transportation costs as rideshares or bus fares.

Repayment of deductible
expense

Pays up to $500 for the rental car owner’s deductible due to a covered loss accident.

What car rental reimbursement doesn’t cover

Here are some examples when rental reimbursement does not apply:

  • If your vehicle is disabled in an incident that isn't covered by either your comprehensive or collision insurance.
  • Rental car and travel expenses that go above your policy's limits.
  • Gas, mileage, additional coverage or security deposits incurred while renting a car.
