Mobile Accident Assistance

For State Farm app users in Florida and Illinois, Accident Assistance is available to app users with an active auto policy and not just users enrolled in Drive Safe & Save.

People in Florida and Illinois that were previously enrolled in Accident Assistance in Drive Safe & Save will be prompted to accept the consent for Accident Assistance in the State Farm app or they can opt out of Accident Assistance.

You can see the FAQs for Accident Assistance in Drive Safe & Save on the Drive Safe & Save FAQ page.

Accident Assistance is an optional feature you can turn on in the State Farm app if you have an active auto policy with State Farm. It uses your phone’s sensors to detect possible accidents, whether you’re in a vehicle insured by State Farm or another insurance company. When Accident Assistance is turned on and a possible accident is detected, we’ll contact you to see what kind of help you may need.footnote 1

When signing up for Accident Assistance, you will be asked to verify that you are logged into the app with your own credentials. It’s important not to share login information with other members of your household. This will ensure the correct individual is contacted during a detected accident. You will also be asked to verify the phone number we have on file for you so we can contact you during a detected accident. Additionally, you will need to enable the permissions for the State Farm app for Accident Assistance to function as intended.

When Accident Assistance is turned on and we detect a possible accident, you’ll get a push notification asking if you’ve been in an accident.

If you tap the notification:

  • The State Farm® app will open, and a screen will display asking if you need an ambulance.
  • If you respond yes, we’ll call you to confirm and help connect you to emergency services.
  • If you don’t answer, we’ll call you again.
  • If you don’t answer the second call, we’ll call up to two more times before requesting that law enforcement go to the location of the detected accident to do a wellness check.
  • If you respond yes you’ve had an accident and no you don’t need an ambulance, you’ll have the option to request a tow or file a claim. If you don’t need either of those at that time or want to wait until later, you can exit the screen.
  • If you request a tow, we’ll call you to confirm.

If you don’t respond to the notification:

  • You’ll get up to two automated calls asking if you need help.
  • If you don’t answer and the data we received indicates the accident may have been moderate to severe, our Accident Assistance support team will call you up to two more times.
  • If you don’t answer the second call and the data we received indicates the accident may have been severe, we’ll request that law enforcement go to the accident location to check on you.

If you need help immediately, call 911. Accident Assistance may not detect all accidents and isn’t a replacement for calling 911.

You can turn Accident Assistance on or off by tapping the Accident Assistance card on the Overview section of the app.

Yes. Each person who turns on Accident Assistance needs to log in to the app using their own credentials, so we contact the right person if we detect a possible accident.

Accident Assistance is a free feature available in the State Farm app for customers with an active State Farm auto policy. For questions about how a claim would impact your premium, contact your State Farm agent.

An accident is detected when all of the below occur:

  • Accident Assistance has been enabled,
  • The State Farm app detects you’re in a moving vehicle,
  • Your phone’s sensors detect forces that indicate an accident, and
  • The vehicle doesn’t resume driving soon after the detected accident.

If you request a tow through the Accident Assistance feature, a claim will be opened automatically for you.

In all other instances, you will be given the option to start a claim in the app.

These settings are required for the State Farm app for each device you want to participate.

  • Let the app run in the background
  • Set location to allow all the time
  • Use precise location
  • Allow physical activity
  • Push notifications must be enabled for the State Farm app
  • Accident Assistance must be turned on in the State Farm app for each household device that would like to participate in Accident Assistance
