Other drivers: Other drivers can set up the app once the business owner has done so. Other drivers can only see trips recorded by their phone in the app.

Contact your agent to make any necessary changes to drivers on your business auto policy. Driver changes on the business auto policy will reflect in the Drive Safe & Save Business app and portal.

You will still need to send a text invite for added drivers to set up the Drive Safe & Save Business app. In the Drive Safe & Save Business app, tap the More tab, then Invite Drivers.

When beacons arrive, a beacon should be paired with each vehicle. This only needs to be done once for each vehicle listed in the app, so another driver may have already paired a beacon for some of the vehicles.

Open the app and tap More.

  1. Select Vehicles and Beacons.
  2. Tap Pair Beacon.
  3. Take the smartphone and a beacon to the vehicle. Press and hold down the button on the beacon until it lights up, which should take about 5-8 seconds.
  4. When you receive a message in the app that the beacon is paired, use the adhesive on the beacon to adhere it to your windshield behind the rearview mirror.

Contact us for assistance setting pairing the beacon.

Settings & Permissions

The app uses Bluetooth to know when it is within range of the beacon so that it knows it is in the business vehicle and when to start and stop recording a trip.

Recommended Location settings allow the app to record trips more accurately and display trip maps.

Activity data allows the app to recognize when you are moving in a vehicle rather than running, walking, riding a bike, etc.

When your iPhone alerts you about the number of times the Drive Safe & Save Business app has used your location services, tapping Always Allow lets the app capture your trips while running in the background. This means you don’t have to open the app every time you take a trip in a business vehicle.

Turning off battery optimization allows the app to capture your trips in the background.

Contact us for assistance with settings and permissions.

Users with recommended phone settings do not need to open the app to record a trip. Bluetooth allows trips to begin recording when the phone comes within range of the Bluetooth beacon and the vehicle begins to move, even when the app is running in the background.

Business owner: The business owner who enrolled with the agent’s office must use the mobile phone number provided to log in to the app for the first time. If the business owner is unable to log in for the first time, the agent’s office will need to confirm and correct the mobile phone number if necessary.

Other drivers: If another driver is unable to log in to the app for the first time, the business owner can update their phone number by tapping the More Tab in the app, then tapping Invite Drivers.

Once any user has logged into the app for the first time, they can update their mobile phone number from the Profile tab within the app.

Bluetooth and location services are required to record trips and display trip maps. If users turn off Bluetooth or Location Services, it is recommended these settings be turned back on before taking a trip in a business vehicle.

A mobile data plan with mobile data enabled is required to record trips. However, if users wish to limit their mobile data and battery usage, they have the option in the app settings to send their trip data to State Farm only when there's a Wi-Fi connection.

Keep in mind, if they do not connect to Wi-Fi, their trips will stay on their phone until they do. This could cause a delay in seeing their trips, and if their phone's memory is full, their trips may not be stored.

Bluetooth beacon

The beacon is a small Bluetooth Low Energy device that helps the Drive Safe & Save Business app know when to start and stop recording a trip and identify the vehicle for each trip.

Once paired with a vehicle, the beacon will prompt the app to begin recording a trip when the phone is in the vehicle, and the vehicle starts to move. This prevents trips from being recorded unless you are in a business vehicle.

By itself, the beacon cannot track location. The beacon uses Bluetooth to let the app know when the phone is in the vehicle and to start and stop recording a trip. The smartphone’s location services allow the app to determine location and display trip maps.

Once the business owner sets up the app, beacons for each enrolled vehicle are shipped to the business auto policy’s mailing address.

Using the adhesive on the back of the beacon to adhere to the windshield is not a requirement but is strongly recommended. We understand some local laws, vehicle sensors, or vehicle upgrades (e.g. tinting) may prevent mounting the beacon to the windshield behind the rearview mirror. If this is the case, choose another sturdy, stationary location near the windshield to stick the beacon, making sure not to adhere it to a surface it may damage.

Please understand the trips may be inaccurate if an employee driver chooses not to mount the beacon at all.

If the beacon is not adhered to a sturdy surface, trips and driving events may not be recorded accurately. Also, if there is metal between the beacon and the phone (e.g., if the beacon is inside a trunk or a metal-lined central console), the Bluetooth connection can be interrupted or weak, which impacts trip recording.

The beacon has an expected battery life of 3-4 years.

If the light does not display on the beacon when the button is held down for 5-8 seconds, a replacement may be needed. Contact us for a replacement.

Trips are assigned to the driver, who is logged into the app on the phone that records a trip. If two drivers with the app installed on their phones are in the same vehicle, the phone that detects the Bluetooth beacon first will record the trip. This can be affected by phone processor capacity and how busy the processor is. If one user has a new phone with a faster processor, their phone might be more likely to record the trip. If phones have comparable processors, but one phone has multiple apps and processes running, the phone with the most available processor capacity may record the trip.

You can label your trips on the Trips tab.

  1. Tap the Trips tab.
  2. Tap the Trip Label for the trip.
  3. Tap the label you would like to assign to the trip.
    • Driver
    • Driver (Passenger used phone)
    • I was not driving

No. If the app is uninstalled, trips will no longer be recorded.

Yes, the beacon is paired to the app, not the phone's Bluetooth settings. If the beacon has been paired in the phones Bluetooth settings, please disconnect the beacon from their phone's settings and pair it from the app.

Use a twisting motion to remove the beacon from the windshield. If the adhesive strip(s) pad remains stuck to the surface, try pulling up on an edge to stretch the tape. If residue remains, try using a citrus based adhesive remover.

You can then recycle the beacon anywhere that accepts lithium ion batteries for recycling.

Trip recording

Trips may not be captured if your phone or app are not using recommended settings.

  • We recommend that Bluetooth is enabled on your phone and for the Drive Safe & Save Business app. You may not see accurate trips maps when you drive in an area with poor GPS coverage.
  • We recommend that Location Services be turned on for your phone, and that Always is selected for the Drive Safe & Save Business app.
  • We recommend Android users enable activity data, which helps your phone know you are moving in a vehicle, and not walking, running, riding a bicycle, etc.
  • We recommend Android users turn off battery optimization, and iPhone users disable Low Power Mode so that trips can be recorded in the background.
  • We recommend iPhone users enable Background App Refresh to allow the app to record trips while running in the background.
  • We recommend cellular data be enabled for the Drive Safe & Save Business app.

Other recommendations:

  • Check for available updates in the App Store or Google Play, and ensure you’re logged in to the most recent version of the app.
  • Low phone battery can impact trip recording and Location quality. This can be avoided by plugging in and charging the phone while driving. Keep phone battery life above 20% at all times.
  • The battery in the Bluetooth beacon may be depleted. Check the beacon and make sure that the red light turns on briefly when the small white button on the front of the beacon is held down for 5-8 seconds. If not, contact us for a replacement.
  • The Bluetooth beacon may not be paired in the app. Open the app and tap the More tab, then Vehicles & Beacons. If the Pair Beacon button is displayed for any vehicles, tap it and follow instructions in the app.
  • If the Wi-Fi setting in the Drive Safe & Save Business app is selected, make sure you connect to Wi-Fi to send trip data. If you are not able to connect regularly to strong Wi-Fi, turn this setting off.
  • Poor cellular connection could be preventing trips from sending. If the Wi-Fi setting is not selected, try selecting it when you're connected to strong Wi-Fi to send trips.
  • If phone memory is full, the app will not be able to record trip data and temporarily store it on the phone.
  • If the app is force closed, it cannot record trips. Try opening the app again.
  • Try restarting your phone. This is like restarting a computer and allows processes to reset.

Basic driving characteristics are determined using information recorded by the Drive Safe & Save Business app. They may take a trip that the app does not capture accurately, but their basic driving characteristics can still be determined from the trips the app does capture.

Contact us for assistance with trip recording.

You can tell a beacon is working if the light briefly illuminates when you hold down the button for 5-8 seconds, and trips appear within the app. If the light does not illuminate, contact us.

Contact us for a replacement.

If the vehicle is not enrolled in Drive Safe & Save Business, it will not show on the app. If you feel you enrolled the vehicle, but it’s still missing, contact your State Farm agent.

Yes. If an enrolled vehicle is replaced and the replacement vehicle is selected to enroll, a new beacon will automatically be shipped to the mailing address associated with the commercial auto policy.

If an employee driver replaces their phone, they simply need to download the Drive Safe & Save Business app on their new phone and log in. Trips will then record automatically on their new phone.
