Trailer insurance coverage

Talk with your agent to make sure your business or farm utility trailer is properly insured.

It is important to consider adding trailer insurance because the cost of your trailer and the contents it hauls may not be covered in the auto policy of the towing vehicle.

A business or farm utility trailer can be a key tool for some businesses and farms because it offers versatility in hauling. They are used for a variety jobs such as:

  • Hauling tools, materials and equipment to and from job sites
  • Delivering and transporting goods for sale to individuals or businesses
  • Hauling livestock or agricultural supplies and equipment

Because what you carry in your trailer can be valuable, making sure it is properly insured is important. Often, trailer coverage is overlooked because trailers are hitched to a towing vehicle, but that vehicle's insurance may not automatically extend auto liability coverage to what is in-tow.

Checking your coverage before the unexpected happens is key. Unfortunately, many trailer owners discover they needed a trailer policy only after a loss occurred.

State Farm® offers insurance policies to help protect trailers including personal and recreational-type trailers such as horse trailers, travel trailers and camping trailers. Be sure to contact an agent to discuss the right coverage for your needs.

Covering your trailer

As you consider insuring your trailer, remember that your trailer may not have adequate coverage just because the vehicle that pulls it meets your insurance needs.

A key point to keep in mind when gathering information about trailer insurance is that in most cases physical damage coverage on the trailer is optional. However, liability coverage may be required to ensure any damages would be covered if caused by the unhitched trailer.

A State Farm agent can review these points with you, find proper coverage for your trailer and provide you with a quote.

When talking to your agent, here is some information that will help them make sure they are giving you the most accurate quote:

  • What type of trailer is it?
  • What is the Gross Weight of the trailer?
    • Gross Weight = the weight of the trailer plus the maximum weight that the trailer is designed to carry
  • What is the Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of the trailer?
  • What is the primary use of the trailer?
  • Does the trailer have any attached equipment?
    • If yes, then describe the equipment and provide the MSRP of the equipment.
  • What type of vehicle primarily pulls the trailer?
