What is first party medical and PIP coverage?

Learn how first party medical coverage works, what it covers and if you need this coverage.

First party medical coverage is a coverage under your auto insurance that pays the reasonable and necessary medical expenses you and your passengers incur due to injuries sustained in an accident, regardless of fault. The type of first party medical coverage available varies by state. Some states offer Medical Payments Coverage (MPC) while other states have Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage. A few states have both PIP and MPC available. First party medical coverage may be legally required or optional depending on where you live. This coverage can overlap with other insurance you have, such as health insurance and disability insurance, so you will need to decide what coverage works for you.

What is typically covered by first party medical coverage?

This coverage pays your (or another covered driver's) reasonable and necessary medical expenses for treatment caused by a car accident. Depending on whether the coverage in your state is PIP or MPC, first party medical benefits may include:

  • Rehabilitation
  • Lost earnings
  • Replacement of services (e.g., childcare if a parent is disabled)
  • Funeral expenses

The coverage varies by state and specific policy. Please speak to your State Farm® agent regarding what is available in your state and what it covers.

How is first party medical coverage different than bodily injury liability?

First party medical coverage helps cover medical costs due to an accident for you and any of your passengers in your insured vehicle. Whereas bodily injury liability coverage helps pay for the medical costs of the third party — the other driver and/or their passengers — in the event you are found at fault in a car accident that results in injury.

How is first party medical coverage different than Underinsured and Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

First party medical coverage covers your medical expenses regardless of who is at fault. Underinsured and Uninsured Motorist Coverage is another type of auto insurance coverage that pays for damages if you or another covered person is injured in an auto crash caused by a driver who does not have liability insurance or is underinsured as defined by the policy.

Am I required to have first party medical insurance?

Some states require drivers to have some level of first party medical coverage, but in other states it is an optional coverage you can get on your car insurance policy. Please speak to your State Farm agent regarding what coverage is required and what optional coverage is available.
