Get connected through community events

Every area has a local culture waiting to be explored.

State Farm® understands moving to a new community isn't always easy, and we're here to help with moving tips from State Farm Agent Jose Martinez. Jose immigrated to Brentwood, California from Mexico 50 years ago, so he knows a thing or two about making a new community feel like home — like checking out local festivals and events.

We introduced Jose to new Brentwood resident Gabriel, so Jose could share his story, and his wisdom, with a new neighbor.

Where's the party?

Find the celebration. Attending local festivals and events is an easy way to dive into the culture of your new community and meet new neighbors. Events like these also provide the opportunity to learn about different organizations and businesses in your area.

The best ways to find local events

Depending on what you're into, most communities offer a little something for everyone. Find a local calendar online or check with your Chamber of Commerce on where to find it. You can also keep an eye on social media for local events.

Another great place to find community event ideas is on bulletin boards at local businesses. A lot of them let people hang promo flyers, and you can find some hidden gems if you keep your eye out. And ask your neighbors too - anyone who's been around for a while should have good insight into what's fun to do in your new community.

Look out for popular festivals and events in your community, such as:

  • Film festivals
  • Arts festivals
  • Food festivals
  • Music festivals
  • Farmer's markets
  • Parades
  • Cultural events
  • First Friday events
  • Volunteer opportunities

You may even find an event you'd like to be part of and volunteering on a planning committee can be a fun way to play a part in helping your community celebrate. And, who doesn't love to celebrate?
